A few days ago an audio tape of Donald Trump making lewd comments about women surfaced the internet. In an effort to make amends, he took to Facebook live apologizing for his transgression.
My favorite part of this whole debacle is the string of tweets that followed the release of these salacious comments.
All of Trump’s tweets sound like he is throwing a temper tantrum. I envision him thrashing on the floor of his evil lair, flailing his arms and screaming “It’s not fair! It’s not fair!”
I wish Trump could’ve been at Debra Bethard-Caplick’s presentation in my social media strategies class.
“If you’re upset get your fingers off the keyboard”
I often wonder if Trump has a social media team that crafts his tweets. Does he yell at them from his golden throne to tweet in all caps? More importantly, why haven’t they changed the passwords on his social media so he can’t tweet anymore? Where is his Frank Underwood?
Debra Bethard- Caplick is a fountain of PR gold. I highly recommend hearing her speak or taking one of her classes at DePaul. These are her three golden tips for social media crisis prevention.
- Edit as you write – keep this in mind, every time you say something in all caps you are yelling in internet speak.
- Think about the consequences – The internet is forever! Hashtags are forever! I personally screenshot every funny/terrible/blackmail worthy tweet just in case I need to use it in conversation or turn it over to the police.
- Don’t do anything in the heat of the moment- If you’re seeing red you do not need to get on the internet. Take a deep breath, count to 10, and wait until your rational thinking is back.
